Scout Shirt & Dress : Virtual Workshop

Thursdays · June 18 - July 23 · 6-8pm EST · 5 weeks, skipping July 2 · $250 / $225 for Studio members

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

The Merchant & Mills Scout is a shirt or dress with an optional tie, inspired by 1920s women’s scouting uniforms. It has a structured, intentional quality that rewards careful construction - the kind of garment where the small details show. Make it as a neat shirt or extend it to a dress with in-seam pockets. The optional tie is cut on the bias and adds another layer of technique. This five-session Zoom sewing workshop focuses on shirt construction: collar and collar stand, placket, shirt-style cuffs, and the button band - the skills that define a well-made shirt.

WHAT YOU’LL MAKE

A Scout shirt or dress in your choice of fabric - linen, lightweight denim, cotton chambray, poplin, or a linen/cotton blend - with or without the optional tie.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Reading and working from a garment pattern
  • Collar and collar stand construction and attachment
  • Shirt placket: construction, folding, and finishing
  • Shirt-style cuffs and sleeve placket
  • Choosing between the shirt and dress version, and in-seam pocket construction (dress)
  • Bias cutting for the optional tie
  • Buttonholes: presser feet, testing, and sewing them cleanly from start to finish

WHAT YOU’LL GET

  • 10 hours of live online sewing instruction across 5 Thursday evening sessions
  • Multi-camera demos - top-down, machine-level, and table view, so you see exactly what’s happening at every step
  • Video replay access to every session, with detailed written notes for each one
  • A dedicated online workshop space for sharing progress, asking questions, and connecting with fellow students
  • Lifetime access to all Scout replays, notes, and resources

A NOTE ON FIT

We’ll cover fit and sizing in the first session. Due to the nature of Zoom workshops, complex fitting is beyond what we can cover thoroughly, but you’ll leave the first session knowing your size and what simple adjustments to make before you cut.
