There’s something empowering about sewing from a PDF pattern. Instant access. No waiting. A whole new world of independent designers at your fingertips.

If you’re new to PDF patterns, though, they can feel slightly mysterious at first.

Let’s walk through it together.

Step 1: Download & Unzip

Most PDF patterns arrive as a ZIP file. After downloading, simply double-click the file to unzip it. Inside, you’ll usually find:

• A print-at-home file (for standard paper)

• A copy shop file (large format, often A0)

• Instructions

• Sometimes layered or projector versions

Everything you need is there, just neatly bundled together.

Step 2: Choose Your Printing Method

You have two main options:

Print at Home

Best if you:

• Want to start immediately

• Don’t mind taping pages together

• Are sewing smaller sizes or pieces

Be sure to:

• Print at 100% scale (NEVER “fit to page”)

• Check the 1" or 5cm test square before printing everything

That tiny square is your best friend.

Copy Shop Printing/A0 Wide Format Printing

Best if you:

• Prefer working with full-size pattern sheets

• Want to skip taping

• Are sewing frequently from PDFs

Most copy shops can print A0 files. Bring the file on a USB stick or upload it online, and request black-and-white printing at 100% scale. Even better - the workroom now offers A0 wide format printing. Upload any designer's pdf sewing pattern and we'll print as many copies as you need in black & white or colour. You can also purchase from our curated selection of pdf sewing patterns with the option to also have a wide format copy printed for you. You can rest assured your patterns will be printed at the correct scale when you print with us.

Step 3: Assembling a Print-at-Home Pattern

If you’re printing at home:

1. Trim (if required) along the margins.

2. Match the alignment marks.

3. Tape or glue the pages together.

4. Double-check your test square again once assembled.

It might feel like an extra step the first time, but after one or two patterns, it becomes second nature.

And there’s something quite satisfying about watching the full pattern come together on your table.

Step 4: Using Layers (If Included)

Many modern PDF patterns include layers, allowing you to print only your size.

Before printing, open the file in Adobe Acrobat (free), select the Layers panel, and toggle off sizes you don’t need.

This keeps your pattern clean and easier to read.

Not all patterns offer this option - for instance, Merchant & Mills only has the option to print all sizes.
