Workshop Description

The Merchant & Mills Florence Top is a beautifully simple A-line silhouette with soft gathers and a graceful shape that works in a wide range of fabrics. Light and airy in linen or voile, more structured in chambray or lawn, it’s a pattern that looks effortless but teaches several foundational sewing skills along the way.

In this workshop, I’ll sew the full garment from start to finish, offering detailed demonstrations while sharing my complete thought process. You’ll see how I interpret the pattern, evaluate each step, troubleshoot in real time, and make construction decisions. My aim is to help you understand not only how to sew the Florence Top, but why each step matters, so you can carry these skills confidently into future garments.

Over three live Zoom sessions, we’ll work through the entire construction with a focus on accuracy, clean finishing, and thoughtful technique choices for both new and returning sewists.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to read and understand garment pattern instructions

  • Preparing and cutting gathered pieces for accuracy

  • Sewing and distributing gathers evenly

  • Attaching facings and understitching for a clean neckline

  • Seam finishing options for a polished interior

  • How to machine sew Buttonholes
  • Troubleshooting and decision-making throughout the build

What You’ll Get

  • 6 hours of live instruction over 3 weeks

  • Multi-camera demos (top-down, machine view, table view)

  • Replay access to every session

  • A dedicated online workshop space for posting progress, asking questions, and connecting with other makers

  • Lifetime access to all Florence Top replays and resources

Sizing, Fit & First Class Preparation

Please have your pattern and fabric on hand for our first session.
We begin every garment workshop with a focused review of measurements, sizing, ease, and preparation before any cutting begins.

Understanding size charts, finished garment measurements, and the pattern’s intended fit is an important part of learning this pattern and a core skill you’ll take into every garment you sew.

We’ll walk through these decisions together in class so you feel clear and confident about how to approach your version of Florence.

Fit Note

We’ll discuss general fit and simple adjustments. More involved, personalized fitting is beyond the scope of a Zoom workshop.
