Once you start serging, you’ll never look back. This class will teach you all the basics, from threading the machine, to adjusting tension. Learn to deal with inside and outside corners, curves and differential feed. See just how quick finishing can be when we make a set of rolled-hem napkins.

This beginner sewing class is one 3-hour session.

Instructor : Leo Schlanger

Prerequisite : No previous sewing machine or serger experience required for this beginner sewing class.

CLASS SUPPLIES : Class fees include workshop registration and in-shop use of sewing machines and irons. All supplies, materials and personal tools are to be provided by each student, unless otherwise specified. Upon enrolment, a Class Confirmation and Supply List will be emailed by our shop team so that these items can be gathered or purchased prior to the class. We welcome a visit, call or email with any questions regarding this workshop and the required supplies prior to registration.


CANCELLATION POLICY : Class fees are non-refundable. Any cancellations or changes to your registration must be done at least 72 hours prior to the class start date in order to be issued a store credit. Cancellations that are made less than 72 hours before the class start date and students who do not show up to class will forfeit their class fee.

Skills + Techniques

Through this workshop series you will learn the following skills:

  • Operating the serger for clean finishing and construction
  • A thorough understanding and practice of threading the serger: two ways
  • Understanding how to make adjustments on the serger cutting dial, differential feed dial, and tension dials
  • A demonstration on how to serge corners and curves
  • A demonstration on serging with the flat lock seam for constructing activewear
  • Serging a decorative rolled hem stitch using wooly nylon thread

Learn in our fully equipped Parkdale Studio. Students who complete our Essentials workshops can book time to Sew By The Hour for their personal projects.
