Natural Dyeing Day Camp : starts Wednesday July 27, 10:30am-5pm for 3 consecutive days
Special Summer Day Camp edition!
An introduction to the magical world of dyeing with natural dyestuffs (plants, bugs and minerals). Students will learn everything they need to know to continue an exploration of natural dyes at home, including mordanting, preparing the dyebath, and dyeing with cotton fabric, linen fabric and wool yarn. Basic surface design techniques such as shibori will also be explored. Each student will also complete a dye sample book for future reference.
The second day of the class will focus entirely on Indigo dyeing and Shibori techniques. An intensive day learning about the magic of Indigo dyeing. Each student will learn to make their own fructose vat to work with during the day. Explore Japanese shibori and other dip dyeing techniques. All dye stuffs will be provided, just bring your fibres for dyeing!
The third day of the class will focus on Mordant Printing. Learn to combine painting, printing and stenciling techniques with thickened mordants to create multiple colours on a single piece of fabric. We will use three different mordants and two separate dyestuffs to achieve a wide palette of colours. Students will learn how to mix the thickened mordant paste, several ways to apply it to fabric, the fixative process, and will dye each piece with natural dyes.
This natural dyeing class is three 6-hour sessions, with a half hour break during each session
The second session is Thursday July 28 and the final session will be Friday July 29th.
